The changes to the HMRC's conditions on the cycle to work scheme (claiming back VAT) has had a detrimental effect on a number of organisations. Some have withdrawn the scheme altogether and others who were looking to implement it, are now reluctant. The regional group felt this was yet another conflicting message from the UK Government - encouraging sustainable travel and reducing Co2 and yet removing so many of the (few) benefits available to businesses.

At the last regional meeting the group discussed the various initiatives and measures which are being implemented or continued across Scotland, despite a reduction in funding for sustainable travel. Some Regional Transport Partnerships are still providing funding for grant schemes for employers. General awareness raising and marketing of sustainable travel is still being promoted through a wide range of medium including radio, bus advertising and social media ads.

Cycling Scotland are still providing small grants to employers looking to achieve Cycle Friendly Employer status.

The Scottish group agreed that we need more representation from the private sector and agreed to spread the word to organisations. It was emphasised that the group would welcome new organisations, who were not currently members, to attend the meetings. However, they will be encouraged to join.
