The annual ATOC Rail and Integrated Transport conference sponsored by Abellio and in association with ACT TravelWise, was held at the Queens Hotel in Leeds on the 29th September.

This exceptionally well attended event showcased successful rail and integrated transport projects with a focus on 'Cycling and Rail', 'Station Travel Plans' and 'Passengers and the decision-making process'.

The conference opened with an upbeat speech from Norman Baker which prompted a flurry of questions about current funding opportunities for local transport projects. As the event's chair, Phillip Darnton provided thought-provoking commentary throughout the day. The conference was peppered with stimulating presentations from some of the industry's most notable expert practitioners leading to lively debate on a range of subjects, including a review of how behavioural change theory can be applied to station travel plans to encourage more sustainable access. A site visit to the Leeds CyclePoint, an impressive cycle hub at the heart of Leeds rail station, enabled delegates to get a first hand feel for the improvements taking place within the rail industry to better foster integration between travel modes. One year after opening the CyclePoint is already attracting high numbers of cyclists.

Comments from sponsors and delegates praised the event for keeping transport practitioners at the forefront of sustainable development, by providing a unique opportunity to share best practice and encourage people to think creatively about the funding sources available.

"One of the most interesting events attended in the last few years."- Conference delegate This event is one to be watched out for in the 2012 events schedule!

If you would like to attend one of ACT TravelWise's upcoming events why not take a look at the DEFRA Behaviour Change Masterclass that will be taking place on 25th January 2012 in London. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from the skills and understanding built up by DEFRA through many years of research and the practical application of behaviuor change approaches.
